Led by Leeds' dermatologist Professor Julia Newton-Bishop, the international GenoMEL consortium brings together teams from around the world who are working on the genetics of melanoma and identifying who is prone to developing the cancer.

We are involved as a full consortium member, in this Five year project which is funded by the EU. We have designed and built the website with a CMS (content management system). We are also developing web based materials, including on line questionnaires from patients and families addressed to risk estimation, risk reduction and gene testing.

Health Psychology Questionnaires show movie 02:04min showreel

As part of our on-going project with GenoMEL, the melanoma genetics consortium, NKD have produced an online questionnaire.

The questionnaire aims to help GenoMEL to learn more about how people behave in the sun and what they think about sun exposure and skin cancer.

They will take advantage of mobile and wireless technologies by allowing doctors, nurse’s and research staff to conduct the studies in and around hospitals via laptops, then linking into the GenoMEL website.

Initially we have built the questionnaire in English but will later create various different language versions to be hosted on the GenoMEL website. We are then to produce a further five questionnaires over the next four years.

Melanoma: Dealing with the Diagnosis.

To make information more accessible to patients who have been diagnosed with skin cancer St James Teaching Hospital approached NKD about developing a CD-Rom.

Using the CD format in conjunction with visits to the Doctor allows the patient to gather the information at their own pace and in their own surroundings. This has the aim of making the experience as comfortable as possible.

With a view of making it as personable as possible the CD not only contains useful information about the cancer and the methods of it's treatment but also includes videos of interviews with patients who have been through the process of diagnosis.

The CD-Rom has now been produced in many other formats: there is a DVD-Rom version available that includes longer interviews, there is a web-based version and it is also now in booklet form.

For beyond the diagnosis of Melanoma this method of giving patients the information they need is currently being developed for the next stages of the illness.

*The DVD is to have minor modifications: to be included is a Master Class delivery to specialists in Europe, used for patients with a new diagnosis of melanoma. Also included will be some modifications of style to make it pan-European.
This will be launched at the forthcoming EADV congress in Vienna, May 2007.
